Wild Supercell in Central New Mexico
YESTERDAY: What a wild non-severe risk chase. Models were painting a concentrated area of hail/wind potential with supercells and I even thought a non-zero tornado chance too. All of it verified, and then some, just south of Albuquerque, New Mexico, yesterday. Almost had a tornado as the storm moved into terrain, and if you count a rapidly rotating wall cloud sitting on a mountain as a tornado it was definitely one!

This was the moment I became convinced this supercell south of Belen, NM, might produce a tornado. This wall cloud had been cranking for over 10 minutes and looked the part in almost every way. This storm produced 2-3″ hail south of town with some compelling structure at times. A wild “no severe risk” chase in Central New Mexico a few hours ago!
