Tornadoes Possible in New Mexico and West Texas

A couple of tornadoes will be possible today across SE NM into West Texas as the remnants of Polo merge with a trough over the western US.

Widespread storms are ongoing and will continue throughout the day in the Southwest/Southern Plains. Major lift is overspreading a historically moist environment in the region, which is leading to a very atypical setup. Thanks to the remnants of Polo, the atmosphere more closely resembles an inland tropical setup over the Southeast U.S. with poor lapse rates aloft leading to low instability. However, low cloud bases and strong shear will favor a couple of tornadoes being possible in SE New Mexico and West Texas.

Damaging winds are a secondary concern, but hail is a pretty low risk thanks to the poor mid-level lapse rates.
